STOP! Before you sign that gym contract, ask yourself these 3 questions.

January is an exciting time! There’s a sense of newness – a chance to change things we don’t like in ourselves. Many of us experience a renewed motivation and determination to do the things that we’ve been putting off (sometimes for years).

This sudden passionate determination is the reason gym memberships soar each January. I’m sure it’s not news to anyone that weight loss and getting fit are some of the most common New Year Resolutions, year after year. I’m guessing they’ve even been on your list at some point in time.

Having the desire to get healthy is by no means a bad thing. It’s great, actually – there’s almost nothing I would encourage you to do more! And joining a gym is often one of the first necessary steps to making that happen, so if you’re thinking about it, you’re on the right track!

The problem with resolutions, though, is that your current motivation will fade. And then what? Will you be able to stick with your newly instituted routines, or will you be stuck paying monthly for a gym membership that never gets used?

Before you commit to paying for that gym membership for the next 12 months, let’s assess how likely you are to still be using it come Fall 2021 by answering these 3 simple questions.

  1. What is different about this time than any year before?

Most likely, if you are considering joining a gym, you’ve tried to get healthy before. Do you understand what kept you from success previously? How will things be different this time?

  1. What is your training and nutrition plan?

There is so much information available to us these days; it can easily become overwhelming to determine what is good information and what should be put aside. Do you know how to train efficiently and safely to reach your goals while avoiding injury? Do you know how to eat in a way that supports your goals, but also allows you to enjoy your food life? A diet you only tolerate will never last, and training that doesn’t show some signs of progress quickly will become a chore.

  1. What does your support system look like?

We become most like the 5 people with whom we spend the majority of our time. Are the people closest to you living the lifestyle you desire to have? You’ve heard it said that the blind can’t lead the blind, and this is definitely true when trying to implement new habits. Who will keep you on track when you want to revert back to the habits of your old comfort zone?

If you have clear answers to each of these questions, then you are much more likely to get value out of your gym membership! If not, it’s important that you get clear on them before committing to spending your hard-earned money for the next 12 months.

You really want things to change in 2021, and with the right support you can make it happen!
