“I just don’t have the motivation to get started.”
Have you ever said that? I surely have; more than I’d like to admit! I used to think that in order to do something new or to achieve a big goal, all I really needed was the right motivation. So, I’d go out of my way to find the motivation to get going. I’d read inspirational blogs/articles, listen to awesome podcasts, search out all relevant memes…whatever it took to pump myself up. And then? Well, I’d jump in with both feet because motivation was high! Unfortunately, that often led to failure because I’d end up jumping in too deep before I knew how to swim. And failure is basically a death sentence for motivation, so that new thing I wanted to do or that big thing I wanted to accomplish never stood a chance. Sound familiar?
I’ve recently learned something that turned my old thinking on its head. Motivation does not drive success; rather, success drives motivation. In order to achieve a goal, one must experience continual success along the way.
Whatever it is you want to accomplish today, know that the only sure way to fail is to never try. That should be the only motivation you need to get started. When you do start, take a small first step and get some success under your belt. Doing so will motivate you to take the next small step. Lots of successful small steps add up to a successful journey.
