It’s that time!

B-A-C-K  T-O  S-C-H-O-O-L!!

Around my house, the kids going back to school is met with a slew of mixed emotions.  We’re excited for the start of something new, and even crave a bit more routine.  But, at the same time, there’s hesitation because the routine can be so…taxing.

Early mornings include rushing around to get everyone dressed, fed and out the door with all necessary supplies.  Afternoons are filled with homework and sports, often leaving little time for anything other than a quick dinner and shower before heading to bed.

No matter how busy our schedules get, I know that good nutrition is necessary for all of us to perform our best (mentally and physically), so it must be a priority.  But, that doesn’t mean that it has to take a lot of time!

I like for my kids to take their lunches to school whenever possible, and this is an easy template that we follow to ensure they get a variety of nutrients to keep them full and fueled for their day – and they get to pick foods that they enjoy!

Have your child(ren) pick one food from each category and mix it up week-to-week to keep things interesting.  Portion sizes are easily measured according to the size of your child’s hand.

Having your child wash his/her lunch down with a bottle of water will help keep them hydrated without adding unnecessary sugar to his/her diet.  If your child doesn’t like the taste of water, try infusing it for 24 hours with his/her favorite fruit!
